first half = T/2 · (1 + p/2), second half = T/2 · (1 − p/2)
The percentage you choose becomes the fraction p (divide by 100), and the goal time T is redistributed around it: the opening half gets T/2 · (1 + p/2), the closing half gets T/2 · (1 − p/2). Because one half gains exactly what the other gives up, the plan always adds back to your goal time to the second. Concretely, ask for a 2% split on a 4:00:00 marathon and you get a 2:01:12 opening half and a 1:58:48 close — a gap of just under two and a half minutes. Pace for each half comes from dividing that half’s time by half the race distance, and the whole computation runs in meters and seconds before converting for display, which is why the mile and kilometer tables never disagree.
